In a hydraulic
system, there are a few components that will make sure that the system will
circulate the hydraulic fluid throughout the system. One of the major components
of the hydraulic system would be the hydraulic pump which is responsible for
forcing the hydraulic fluid to flow in one direction and to supply energy for
the fluid to circulate. There are a few equations that you should know during a
calculation evolving a hydraulic pump will be given with a some question sample
that may aid you to understand how to used the equation.
Question 1:
(volumetric flow rate)
Consider a
piston that has a RPM of 900 or 15Hz and an area of 0.00196 meter square for each piston. The number of piston present in this
pump is 6 and the stroke for each piston would be 0.04m, evaluate the volumetric
flow rate (VFR) of the hydraulic pump.
From this
equation, we can determine the amount of hydraulic fluid that will be pump from
the reservoir to the hydraulic system in every second which will come in handy
to calculate the theoretical output of the hydraulic pump which will be shown
in the next question.
Question 2:
(Theoretical Output)
Based on the answer
obtain in the question above, determine the theoretical output of the hydraulic
pump.
The reason why
the theoretical output is important to know is for the next equation where we
can find the Volumetric Efficiency of the hydraulic pump which shows how
efficient the pump transfer the hydraulic fluid base on the predicted transfer
per pump.
Question 3:
(Volumetric Efficiency)
Given that the theoretical
output of a certain hydraulic pump is 0.08 cubic meter for every pump cycle,
but the actual output is 0.06 cubic meter, calculate the volumetric efficiency
of the hydraulic pump.
Just bear in mind
if the efficiency is above that 100 percent, then you have something wrong with
your calculation. Of course, the total efficiency of the hydraulic pump is not
equal to the volumetric efficiency because the pump involve some mechanical function
which will include the mechanical efficiency which will be further explain in
the next question.
Question 4:
(Overall Efficiency)
Find
the overall efficiency of a hydraulic pump which has the volumetric efficiency
of 0.75 and a mechanical efficiency of 0.8.
The efficiency
does not have any unit because it is cancel out in the equation, a good pump
will provide with a high efficiency, these given value are for question and
learning purpose and not base on a real hydraulic pump, but the equations and
formulas are, so there is no worry in that.
